Nanga Brook bushfires given all clear after weeks of battling the blaze
After weeks of battle from hundreds of volunteers, the Nanga Brook bushfires that scorched 300ha and destroyed eight properties last month has been given the all clear.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services announced the good news on Wednesday after weeks of battling to control and contain the blaze.
At its peak the fire stretched across the Shires of Waroona and Murray, risking properties in Coolup, Dwellingup, Nanga Brook, and the Waroona townsite, covering much of the area in smoke for days at a time.
The fire was deemed to be accidentally lit by a couple attempting to use a car battery to charge their mobile phones while camping.
Last week the State Government announced relief payments for those who lost their homes, or had property damaged by the fires.
Waroona fire chief Steve Thomas said residents should remain vigilant despite the blaze being defeated while the Shire of Waroona has extended its prohibited burning season indefinitely to reduce the risk of this happening again.
Mr Thomas said the restrictions will remain in place until there is substantial rain to reduce the risk of another inferno.
He highlighted the support and dedication from all the firefighters who assisted in containing the blaze.
“I would like to express my sincere thanks to all our local authorities within Waroona,” he said.
