A not-for-profit organisation is set to launch its free laundry services for those sleeping rough in Bunbury.

Orange Sky will set up its 44th location nationwide in the city, which will offer “laundry facilities and a safe space for genuine connection” for those who need help.

It comes after a dramatic rise in homelessness in the Greater Bunbury region, with Australian Bureau of Statistics data showing a 54 per cent increase between 2016 and 2021.

The rise has seen demand for homelessness support services such as Doors Wide Open skyrocket, with the organisation set to assist Orange Sky with its Bunbury operations.

Orange Sky co-founder Lucas Patchett said the organisation was proud and very excited to be launching in the city.

“Positively connecting communities is at the heart of everything we do and it is no surprise that Aussies are doing it really tough right now,” he said.

“It’s never been more important for Orange Sky to launch more services and help more communities in need, especially with the rise in cost of living and the current housing crisis.”

Doors Wide Open manager Mish Holzknecht said the not-for-profit group was thrilled to be expanding its services.

“We are excited to have Orange Sky and their washing machines and dryers joining us at Doors Wide Open to support those that are struggling through these tough times,” she said.

“It’s truly heartwarming to be able to make a difference in our community.”

Orange Sky’s Bunbury operation will comprise a laundry pod — a stand-alone structure with two washing machines and two dryers operated by a team of volunteers.

The new service in Bunbury is set to officially launch on September 2, with the facility to be open every Monday and Thursday from 10am to noon.

An open day will also be held at Doors Wide Open on August 3 from 9.30am to 11.30am.
