Owners of a Bunbury business have threaded their way into top honours at Australia’s Optus My Business Awards 2018.

Zubias Threading beat three other finalists to be named beauty service business of the year at the awards in Sydney on November 9.

Owners Riz and Sandrine Syed have made a name for themselves on the eyebrow threading scene with several franchises across the State, including their Bunbury Forum-based store.

Mr Syed said his team and loyal customers had helped the business grow and the award proved it was on the right track.

“Our loyal customers, either myself or my wife had to teach and show each and every one of them what we do and once we built their trust and confidence, that’s when they became our advocates,” Mr Syed said.

“From virtually nothing, we now employ 150 staff who are mostly migrants ... they are already so grateful to be here. Our staff come from countries like Persia, Afghanistan, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Mauritius.

“Many could not get work elsewhere ... I believe that we are all working together and I have a responsibility to help others.

“I have a very strong culture in my company of people who want to make a future here.”

The couple launched the beauty business in 2008 when they believed there was no other traditional Indian hair removal process available in the State.

Mr Syed said the secrets to their successful business were a clear and genuine purpose that added value to customers, a focus on employees, willingness to try something different, working hard and planning ahead.

“We grew the skills ourselves on real people and then we realised we had a special way of doing the eyebrows,” he said.

“Which is why we are unique in what we do and we train our staff to do it our way.

“Our staff are the perfect threaders because their cultures are familiar with manipulating thread and their motor skills are magnificent,” he said.
