Princess Zelda continues form
Princess Zelda’s purple patch of form continued on Sunday when she won the $19,000 Flex Contracting Handicap (1000m) at the Bunbury Turf Club.
The four-year-old mare sat at the back of the pack before finding room on the outside of the straight to push ahead of the pack before winning by more than two lengths from Deep Cover ($3.30).
It was the second-straight win for Princess Zelda after she broke maiden status across 1100m at Ascot last month and Sunday’s win gives the Boyanup-based thoroughbred two wins from nine races.
Trainer Tom Widdeson said he was happy for Princess Zelda to let the others set the pace.
“She is probably better off sitting back and having a ping home like she has,” he said.
“We have done a bit of a gear change after a four-week break and it seems to have worked for her.
“We put the winkers and cross-over on and took the tongue-tie off her. She seems pretty happy.”
Widdeson said he would only look to take Princess Zelda up to the 1200m at the most for the foreseeable future.
“We had her nominated for the Saturday race, but it was a strong race so we decided to bring her here,” he said.
“I think I will just put her through her classes at the moment and see how she goes.”
Widdeson praised jockey Jason Brown for his efforts.
