Prisoners join fight against drugs through restoration

Money from the sale of a 1995 Land Rover Defender, restored by Bunbury prisoners, will be given to Doors Wide Open.

After taking part in the Bunbury Regional Prisons Sycamore Tree Program, Bunbury resident Kerry Trantham suggested the addiction recovery service as a beneficiary when he and others decided to donate the vehicle and money for its restoration.

“We made contact with superintendent Kerrie Bishop and she was very willing to get on board,” he said.

“We had overwhelming enthusiasm from management, staff and the residents who had the expert skills to complete the project and took ownership of the restoration which is of a very high standard.”

Doors Wide Open chairwoman Jane Anderson thanked all involved for putting their “heart and soul” into the project.

“The sale of this vehicle will not only contribute much-needed funds to Doors Wide Open, it will also communicate a message of goodwill to the many who are afflicted by methamphetamine use,” she said.
