A major road into Bunbury is now safer for cyclists and road users after significant upgrades were officially completed last week.

The major upgrades to Estuary Drive included widening and a three-metre wide shared path between Willinge Drive and the railway crossing.

A kerb barrier has been installed allowing for a safer passage for cyclists and other path users.

Mayor Gary Brennan said the important upgrades would benefit the entire community between Australind and Bunbury.

“You’ve got the health aspect — people love walking, running, cycling and also it’s about safety,” Mr Brennan said.

“It looks great, it’s a lot safer and its just part of what the city (council) does. We are very proud of the fact that we’re able to do a lot of work on those different areas.

“When you look at our pathways, we’ve spent several million dollars on them over the last few years and the community benefits.”

This project was partly funded by the Department of Transport through its Western Australian Bicycle Networks Grants program and the Federal Government Roads to Recovery program.

The next stage of improvements are set to start within the next 12 months and will see the remainder of the road and path to Pelican Point upgraded.
