South West residents urged to be aware of changes to emergency warnings as WA adopts Australian standard

South West residents will notice a change in emergency warnings from this week as the State adopts a new system. The use of the Australian Warning System officially started in WA on Monday, which will see the three warning levels of Advice, Watch and Act, and Emergency Warning used across all major weather events including bushfires, storms, floods, cyclones and heatwaves. Warnings will go up and down in severity depending on the risks to lives and homes, similar to the current system for bushfires. The All Clear level has been scrapped as part of the change, with a final Advice message to be issued as its replacement to highlight remaining hazards. Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson said the system will help people better understand what they need to do in an emergency situation. “Up until now there has been a range of different alerts and warning levels for different hazard types across Australia and now the AWS will help everyone make informed decisions to protect themselves, their families and their property,” he said.
