South West weather: Super storm sees region lashed by heavy rains, winds up to 135km/h
The South West has copped the brunt of a “twice a year” weather system that saw the region lashed with wild conditions of heavy rain and wind gusts up to 135km/h.
Damaging winds battered the coast overnight as the strong cold front moved across the South West.
Cape Leeuwin reported the strongest gust of 135 km/h at 2.46am, with Busselton Jetty and Cape Naturaliste trailing close behind, recording gusts of 124 km/h and 119 km/h about 2.50am respectively.
Wild weather brought about strong rains that saw Waroona hit with a downpour of 35.2mm in a three-hour span yesterday afternoon.
Several trees have fallen down across the region, with motorists being urged to drive with caution.
Western Power said the damage has caused power outages to more than 4000 South West homes, including residents in Manjimup, Bridgetown, Boyanup, Donnybrook, Capel, Pemberton and surrounds.
Department of Fire and Emergency Services has reported flooding on South Western Highway at Swamp Road, Benger near Harvey and two road crashes have been reported overnight on Bussell Highway at Bentley Drive, Capel and Coalfields Highway at Montgomery Street, Allanson.
The Bureau of Meteorology has extended the severe weather warning for the region, with destructive winds, abnormally high tides and damaging surf set to continue.
Winds are expected to ease during the morning, but showers are likely to continue throughout the week.
