South West’s Sam Whiteman, Jayden Goodwin and Lance Morris named in WA men’s cricket contract list for 2022-23

A Sheffield Shield final hero, a son-of-a-gun and a Dunsborough speedster were the three South West cricket stars to be named among the 29 men on WA’s contract list for 2022. Former Colt’s Cricket Club openers Sam Whiteman and Jayden Goodwin, and Dunsborough fast bowler Lance Morris were named in the squad for 2022-23 following WA cricket’s most successful year to date. WA won the Marsh One-Day Cup and Sheffield Shield in 2021-22, with Whiteman and Morris both featuring in the latter, while the Perth Scorchers took out BBL 11. Whiteman was named player of the match in the Shield final, with scores of 85 and 123 at the top of the order helping to guide them to their first title in the tournament since 1998-99. Morris took 2-67 in Victoria’s first and only innings for the match, removing Mitchell Perry for 74 and Nic Maddinson for 20. Goodwin kept his spot on the rookie list for this season after making his first class debut for the state against Queensland at the GABBA in November. The son of former Zimbabwean test batter Murray played two matches in the shield side following a marathon maiden first grade 100 for Subiaco-Floreat in the WACA competition. Goodwin said he was thrilled to be given another opportunity to continue his WA cricket journey alongside Morris and Whiteman. “It is a dream come true to be living the life we are living right now, so I am very grateful to be given another year as part of the squad,” he said. “If I keep performing and coaches are happy with what I am doing I will eventually move on (to the senior list), but I am happy with where I am at. “I look up to (Sam and Lance), I grew up with them and it good to have them as your mates in the team. “For Sam to play so well in the final, and Lance to be bowling as well as he is, it is amazing.” Head coach Adam Voges said he was glad to keep the most of the squad together from the dominant year. “It’s nice to keep the majority of the squad together after a successful season and it’s great to have five players on Cricket Australia contracts, which has allowed us to upgrade some of our rookies and bring some new faces into the squad,” he said.
