Bunbury’s needy are now a bit better off thanks to the efforts of Bunbury Senior High School’s Year 12 cohort and leadership team.

More than 100 care packs containing personal hygiene items for both men and women and non-perishable food items were handed over to three of the city’s biggest relief providers last week.

The Salvation Army, Bunbury Soup Van and Accordwest all received a share of the packs and will distribute them accordingly in the coming weeks.

“There’s some pads for women, shaving cream and razors for men and some little snacks in there among other things,” prefect Lauryn Heasman said.

All of the items used in the packs were donated last month as part of the school’s Year 12 sleep out event, an experience head girl Amber Ramage described as eye opening.

“None of us got any sleep and we were under a roof, so to think that that wasn’t even the extreme and we were cold, uncomfortable and had sore backs was very eye opening,” she said.

Representatives from all three relief bodies attended the event and gave speeches about Bunbury's homelessness situation and what life was really like on the streets.

School principal Craig Pettit said he was very proud of his students and admired their wisdom.

“Some of the fundraising they’ve done and the experience they had on that night has been very good for them,” he said.

“One of our global visions is about homelessness and supporting the homeless, so it really ties in what the whole school is about and I’m very proud of what they’ve done.”
