SW beach party leaves mess for lifesavers

Dalyellup Beach Surf Life Saving Club was left to clean up a “massive” mess after a suspected beach party on Saturday night.

Broken glass, unopened alcohol, drug paraphernalia and even a sleeping 14-year-old party-goer greeted surf lifesavers when they hit the beach for their Sunday morning training.

The Gelorup Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade was called to the gathering, after it is understood three fires had been started as part of the celebrations.

Bunbury police confirmed officers had attended the area after reports of children loitering on streets near the beach between midnight and 2am.

Officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Mal Jones said about 20 kids were told to move on and “keep quiet”, but there were no reports of an out-of-control gathering.

Dalyellup Beach Surf Life Saving Club co-director Tayla Hadden said the aftermath of the gathering was a danger to the community after broken glass was scattered in the sand.

“We had about 10 to 12 members down there breaking up the fires and cleaning up glass bottles that had been broken,” Ms Hadden said.

“That was the dangerous part, if they left the bottles unbroken it would have been better.”

The club started the clean-up at 8am to “make the beach safe” and after nearly three hours collected several bags of rubbish, eskies and chairs.

Ms Hadden said items found were “horrifying” for the club’s lifesavers – some as young as 14.

“We understand people want somewhere to go, but take everything back with you, this is a family spot and it’s a danger to the community,” she said.
