South West Academy of Sport athlete Joel Doddy is among those aiming to be the “best on the beach” at the 2023 Australia Surf Life Saving Championships taking place in Perth.

Speaking before the event, the Bunbury teenager said he was going into this year’s nationals with the benefit of experience, having put himself to the test on the Gold Coast last year.

“It was a bit nerve-wracking at the start because it was my first one but I feel like I’m going to be heaps more confident this year because I know what I’m going to go up against this year,” Joel said.

“The Aussies” (nationals), which runs until Sunday, is the biggest event of its kind with competitors from more than 300 surf clubs across the country racing in beach and ocean events.

Joel began competing on Monday, going up against the best in his age group to earn bronze in the Under-17 Champion Life Saver event after qualifying at the State Championships.

The 17-year-old, who attends Bunbury Senior High School, was in fine form in the lead-up to nationals, with recent successful stints at regional and State level.

At the SunSmart WA Surf Life Saving Championships, Joel earned gold in the Under-17 Gold Champion Life Saver event as well as silver in the beach flags and fourth in the single ski.

Additionally, Joel claimed nine gold, four silver and two bronze medals across the Under-17 and Open divisions at the Sunsmart WA Country Championships.
