Augusta-Margaret River coach Matt Jamieson knew things were not going to be easy ahead of Saturday night’s home opener against Busselton.

Subjected to a physical, fast, high-octane contest, the reigning premiers fell to the Magpies, 9.12 (66) to 7.11 (53) under lights.

Jamieson, as always, was philosophical about his side’s performance. Fortunately for him, he had several extra eyes on the field — senior players Simon Moore, Garry Moss and Stevie Payne — who were quick to acknowledge self-improvement.

“This was the most pleasing thing post-game,” Jamieson said, ahead of his side’s huge grand final rematch against South Bunbury on Saturday at Hands Oval.

“As well as Moorey played, he was probably a little bit disappointed with his disposal. And he was one to be quite deep in reflection about how Busselton are going to be strong competition this year.

“There was a lot (of things) in the game we did poorly and it was urged as soon as the game vision came out, to jot down a couple of things that could make them better.

“I am sure as a whole this will hold us in good stead.”

Like his players, Jamieson is a proud competitor as a coach — therefore pitting himself against a quality Tigers outfit once again is an opportunity not to be missed.

“I think with grand final rematches, there is always a little extra heat in those games,” he said.

“It has come early for us in the season and it is a good challenge for us to try and bounce back from not winning in round one.

“We will be doing all we can to beat South on Saturday and I am sure they will be doing the same.”

Tigers coach Julian Burgess was pleased with his side’s opening round win over the Collie Eagles up the hill — and his side’s goal for the Hawks clash is a simple one.

“We just look forward trying to get better each week,” he said. “I know it is a cliche, but this is how I treat coaching, as I look forward to every game.”
