Swimmers shine en masse at premier regional event

Bunbury Swimming Club head coach Toni Moore has praised the efforts of her swimmers at the recent three-day Country Championships held at HBF Stadium in Perth.

Moore said the event was the highest standard of competition for regional swimmers in the State.

“We had 48 swimmers ranging in age from eight to 18 which is almost half of the club,” she said.

“The kids achieved 207 personal best times which is a lot more than last year.

“It is just really pleasing to see the kids achieving their goals and they were having fun and supporting each other.

“That’s probably the best part of the meet – it is a great chance for our swimmers to support each other.”

Moore said with such a successful meet it was difficult to point out any stand out performances.

“There were a number of kids who won multiple medals,” she said.

“A number of kids recorded State qualifying times so it is really hard for me to single any out.

“Usually there are a couple of stand outs you can mention but the team just did so well as a whole.

“I think off the top of my head it was 159 individual medals over the three days and I think it was 14 relay team medals.”

Moore said the club was looking forward to the State Championships on January 20 and 21.

“We have only got six of our swimmers going to that,” she said.

“But we also have five of our swimmers competing in the Australian Open Water National Championships in Adelaide over the Australia Day weekend.

“So that is a pretty big achievement for five swimmers from a regional club in WA.”
