Top 10 things to do this week

Another fun packed week in the South West, with music, movies, planting up Koombana Bay and ... Obstacle Hell? Bring it!

1. Obstacle Hell

Challenge yourself to take on 5km of military inspired obstacles when Obstacle Hell makes its way to Shrubland Park, home of the Bunbury Motorcycle Club, on Saturday.

The untimed course will see competitors tackle 35 obstacles including mud pools, rope walls, cargo net climbs, spider webs, ice baths, tyre runs, traverse walls, tunnel runs and more.

The obstacle course is for people of all ages and fitness levels, with 40 competitors to each session.

2. Family Proms at BREC

Explore Merrie England through its enthralling music including popular family classics such as Greensleeves, The Teddy Bear’s Picnic, Hallalujah Chorus and Dambuster’s March in a delightful family concert held on Saturday at 3pm at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre.

Comprising an orchestra of 45 local musicians, under the watchful eye of conductor David Pye, Philharmonic South West bring an array of masterful talent to the stage.

3. Planting Day

Help plant native seedlings on the dunes at Back Beach in Bunbury on Sunday to help erosion and sand movements onto the path.

Volunteers will meet at the Hayward Street beach carpark at 9am and will plant until 11am, with morning tea included.

Gloves and safety glasses are supplied, but volunteers should wear long pants, long sleeved shirts as well as brining a hat and water bottles.

4. Dune Rats

Fresh off the back of their sold-out national tour and following their addition to the Splendour in the Grass line-up, the Dune Rats will head to the Prince of Wales Hotel on Sunday as part of their national regional tour.

The Dune Rats will be supported on their run by Perth legends Tired Lion and party-happy band Pandamic.

5. Despicable Me 3

The adventures of Gru, Lucy and their adorable daughters Margo, Edith and Agnes (and of course the minions) continue in Despicable Me 3, as they face a new nemesis, Balthazar Bratt – a former child star who has grown up to be obsessed with the character he played in the 80s.

Gru also gets involved in some sibling rivalry when he meets his long-lost, charming and cheerful brother Dru who has plans to team up for one last criminal heist.

Despicable Me 3 will be screened in cinemas from Thursday.

6. Rag N’ Bone

Perth rock outfit Rag N’ Bone will hit the Prince of Wales Hotel on Thursday night with their A Handful of Ash debut album tour on Thursday night.

The band cite their influences as The Jesus Lizards, Midnight Oil and The Birthday Party.

The group will be supported by Flossy – a Perth-based sister band with a grunge pop sound influenced by Nirvana, Sonic Youth and the Pixies.

7. Drag Queen Bingo

The Bunbury Turf Club will host a night full of laughs and crazy antics with Drag Queen Bingo on Saturday at 7pm. Hosted by the fabulous Feminem, guests can try their luck at winning prizes sponsored by Pleasures Unlimited Bunbury and the Hotel Lord Forrest.

8. Souwest Jets

Round 9 of the WA Netball League will see the ECU Souwest Jets take on the Wheatbelt Flames at the Eaton Recreation Centre on Sunday.

The under-18 teams will be the first to take to the court at 12pm, followed by the reserves game at 1.35pm and finally the league game from 3.10pm.

9. Live Wire ACDC tribute

After playing to a 20,000 strong audience at the Rockingham foreshore on New Year’s Eve, AC/DC tribute band Live Wire will return to the Highway Hotel on Saturday for an explosive night of high voltage rock and roll. Doors will open from 8pm, with tickets available from the venue or online at Moshtix.

The gig will also feature special guest Scotty Gordon.

10. Eisteddfod

The final week of the Eisteddfod is under way, with choral, vocal and instrumental performances closing out the three-week-long program.

Friday will feature vocal and choir performances with sessions starting at 10am, 1.30pm, 3.50pm and 7pm at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre.

Saturday will be the final day of this year’s Eisteddfod, featuring instrumental performances by soloists, ensembles, orchestras, big and concert bands running at the same session times as above.
