Henderson crash: Police suspect 18-year-old driver went through red light before crashing his Mitsubishi

Police suspect an 18-year-old man who died after a horrific crash south of Perth on Tuesday night was speeding and may have gone through a red light prior to crashing his car. The West Australian has obtained new and tragic details behind the crash, which occurred around 10.50pm on Tuesday as the teen was driving a silver Mitsubishi 380 sedan north on Rockingham Road in Henderson. As the Mitsubishi approached the intersection of Russell Road, it veered off the road and collided with several trees. The driver - whose first name is believed to be Marcus - found himself on the road after the crash. Tragically, a passing vehicle that had stopped to provide assistance struck the teenager. The teen was left critically injured before dying at the scene. The West understands dash-cam footage from a vehicle that was in the area at the time of the crash captured the Mitsubishi speeding and going through a red light before crashing. That footage is now in the process of being examined further by police as part of an investigation being led by the major crash squad. On Wednesday, a red P-Plate, engine parts, tyre marks and piles of scattered belongings lay beneath several trees near the crash site. Two young women visited the site to pay their respects and lay flowers on the busy roadside on Wednesday afternoon but they were too upset to speak. The crash which claimed the 18-year-old man’s life was one of two fatal crashes on WA roads on Tuesday night. The other crash claimed the life of a 64-year-old man who came off his motorcycle in the South West. The man was driving his black and orange Harley Davidson motorcycle on Forrest Highway when it veered off the road and crashed about 7.30pm near the intersection of Riverdale Road. The man suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Bunbury Hospital where he died a short time later Major crash investigators are urging anyone with any information about both crashes to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. The two fatalities come less than 24 hours after the father of Nick Campo — the 18-year-old killed in a car crash in July — provided more heartbreaking details about the crash which killed his son. Nick was a passenger in a Toyota Hilux being driven by a 17-year-old boy when it crashed on Farrington Road in North Lake before rolling and ploughing into a Jeep Patriot. They had just left Nick’s birthday party. The driver has since had his dangerous driving charge upgraded to manslaughter. Speaking on morning radio on Tuesday after attending a road safety summit the previous day, Mr Campo revealed more detailed information about the crash which claimed his son’s life. He said police had told the family that they will allege the vehicle involved had reached high speeds before the crash and the vehicle had its sway bars removed as well as other defects. “This is something that I did bring up yesterday at the forum is that too many kids, especially these P-platers are lifting their cars or modifying it and just no checks (are) done afterwards,” he told 6PR. “People have just got to understand a vehicle was made for one reason, to get you from A to B. “Please everyone, just please be safe.”
