A man will be extradited from Queensland after shots were allegedly fired at police during a wild pursuit through Sydney’s southwest this week.

Police were called to reports of a man attempting to gain entry to a home in Edensor Park about 1.30am on New Year’s Eve.

Officers were told two people believed to be armed with a firearm had fled in a Hyundai sedan.

The car was later seen driving alone Cowpasture Rd in Hinchinbrook and police attempted to stop the car.

A pursuit was initiated after the Hyundai failed to stop, however it was called off shortly after due to safety concerns.

Police will allege someone fired shots at police from inside the Hyundai during the pursuit, which hit the bonnet of the police car.

No officers were injured.

The Hyundai crashed on St Andrews Rd in Varroville about 1.50am after road spikes were laid out.

Officers seized two pistols, an assault rifle, other weapons and several spent cartridges during a search of the car.

The passenger of the Hyundai fled the scene on Tuesday, with police unable to find him at the time.

However a 20-year-old man was arrested at Brisbane Airport on Friday following inquiries with the assistance of the Australian Federal Police and Queensland Police.

Detectives are set to travel to Queensland to apply for the man’s extradition, while inquiries under the strike force continue.

The 20-year-old male driver, Faez Finau, was earlier arrested and refused bail, with Mr Finau facing a string of break and enter and weapons charges.

Mr Finau did not apply for release on bail on Wednesday and will remain behind bars on remand before he is due to reappear before the court on February 26.

It is understood both Mr Finau and the resident of the Edensor Park property have affiliations to the organised crime network.

“With the affiliation of the resident of the premises, we can only speculate that it’s gang-related,” NSW Police deputy commissioner Peter Thurtell said.

Mr Thurtell also earlier said at least two shots hit the police car.

“Fortunately, the officer and the dog were uninjured,” Mr Thurtell said.

“This was a very dangerous situation where the lives of our police officers were put at risk.”
