WA Day Festival 2024: Celebrations to continue across the State with activities in many regional areas

While the wild weather may have forced the cancellation of the Perth-based WA Day festivities, the celebrations will continue across the State with a host of family-fun activities today and this month. From thong throwing in the Great Southern to spectacular drone shows in our far north, there is something for everyone. And best of all it’s free. ALBANY There is nothing more Australian than a pair of pluggers, so it is apt that on the day we celebrate all things West Australian the city that sits on our most southern tip will play host to the annual Thong Throwing Competition as part of its festivities. The skilful and hotly contested event, hosted by the Museum of the Great Southern, will be accompanied by live entertainment featuring Albany Ukulele Group, Bird on a Wire Choir, and local musicians Geoff Waldeck and Kimbo, origami lessons, delicious food stalls, vintage car displays as well as a community art installation. It will run from 10am to 2pm on June 3. KALGOORLIE Our Goldfields region is set to play host to range of activities that pay homage to the area’s rich cultural diversity. Besides free musical entertainment, market stalls and food trucks, the event will showcase a rescue demonstration, hold a silent PRIDE disco, feature an Aboriginal art exhibition, a high ropes course and Regina Donaldson, custodian of Dreamtime stories from the Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Coolgardie area, who will share the Karlkurla Dreaming story through collaborative art and storytelling, offering a glimpse of the region’s cultural heritage. The event will take place at the Museum of the Goldfields between 10am and 2pm June 3. GERALDTON The Museum of Geraldton will play host to the Mid-West region’s WA Day festivities with museum trails, roving entertainers, live local musical artists, facepainting as well as a range of fresh food and produce on display. Locals will also be able to contribute to an interactive artwork that captures the spirit of community and identity. Your thoughts and feelings will become part of a living masterpiece preserved for future generations to explore. The fun runs from 10am until 2pm. CARNARVON/GWOONWARDU MIA This beautiful coastal town plans to celebrate as well as acknowledge the histories, diverse cultures, and contributions made by all who proudly call WA home. From traditional weaving sessions guided by local Aboriginal artists to decorating your own cookies and face painting, there will something for everyone. For the younger ones there will be an animal petty zoo as well as face painting and the high-energy Boogie Wonderland Disco Dance Extravaganza. There will also be free music, food trucks, Aboriginal dance performances and art and cultural stalls. It will run from 10am until 2pm. FREMANTLE While still in the metropolitan area, Fremantle’s Fishing Boat Harbour at WA’s most famous port city will be will be packed with entertainment, delicious local food, an Indigenous fashion parade, as well as performances from Samba dancers, a tribute show to Kylie Minogue and a children’s entertainment program. Freo’s festivities run from 11am until 5pm. Other cities and towns around WA will also hold events for the rest of the month with Busselton set to host their WA Day celebrations on June 8 which includes a fireworks display and a drone show. The following Saturday, Karratha will put on its show at Hampton Oval with free live music, food stalls and a drone show. And in the Pilbara region, Newman will host their WA Day celebrations at Emu Oval on June 23. It too will have a spectacular drone show, live music, family friendly activities and food stalls.
