Bunbury joins Gaelic game
A different sort of game is getting a growing culture in Bunbury with its first Gaelic football club being established.
The Bunbury Gaels club has entered the Gaelic Football and Hurling Association's Sevens league, with a side for both men and women competing.
Co-founder Ronan O'Mara said the club was set up after a conversation between members of the Irish community in the region.
"There are a lot of clubs in Perth and a few of us decided to get together to start something up," he said.
Training on Friday nights at Hay Park, the club has a strong player base, but is still hoping to get more people on board, with ex-AFL players their ideal recruits.
"Our first day we advertised an informal get together and we got about 25 people down to have a kick around," he said.
"We took 16 guys up to Perth and 10 ladies, so the response for the community has been great.
"We have really just reached the tip of the iceberg."
O'Mara said anybody could play the game.
The men's side is yet to win a game, but the women have tasted success once from their first three encounters.
