Bunbury nippers up for Wave Warriors comp

SOUTH WESTERN TIMESSouth Western Times

While Bunbury's surf lifesaving focus this weekend will be on the 100th birthday celebrations, some club members will be competing in Perth.

Club nippers and sisters Paige, 11, and Emma Stegmann, 10, will be at Mullaloo Beach for the Wave Warriors junior challenge.

The pair will compete in a variety of events including an ocean swim, board race, sprint and also the ironman - which combines the three disciplines.

They have been involved with the surf lifesaving club for four years and made the decision to compete in events last year.

They swim two to three mornings per week and are on their boards up to four afternoons a week, but "they don't see the afternoons as training" according to mother Belinda.

"They love the surf club environment and it becomes a lifestyle for them," she said.

Paige believes her training will be beneficial during Sunday's event.

"It definitely helps me feel a lot stronger than what I did at the start of training," she said.

"It's nice to compete against people you don't really know and getting to know them better."

The Wave Warriors event is held across Australia and is in its fifth year.

It was set up by ironman Zane Holmes to give juniors a chance to experience the ironman series.
