The South West's oldest registered playgroup achieved a milestone on Friday when it celebrated its 40th birthday.

Bunbury Playgroup held an afternoon tea and children's activities at its East Bunbury site to celebrate the achievement and even brought out a giant birthday cake for the occasion.

Playgroup WA South West development officer Karen Collins said there were a number of reasons why Bunbury Playgroup had been able to remain active over a long period.

"Like all community-run groups, it works by people taking their role then passing it on to others," she said.

"To have something continuously going for 40 years is pretty good.

"I think it's because of the population but having the support of the community and also having facilities like this that are just for the playgroup. Not having to share facilities makes a difference."

Bunbury Playgroup committee president Sara Knauf said the group had about 50 families that were active members with most of those having two or more children.

She said Friday's celebration was an opportunity for children to enjoy free play in the centre. She believed the Forrest Street location was a factor in their longevity.

"The fact we still have our natural surroundings helps," she said.

"The majority of groups are always outside enjoying the gardens."

Mrs Collins said about 15 families came to the birthday celebration, which included new families and one with two generations who had attended the playgroup.

"It was a really lovely way of recognising the 40 years," she said.
