A framework to guide Bunbury's art and cultural development will make the city a complete community, according to Mayor Gary Brennan.

The Creative City Strategy will guide the council in making decisions about cultural and arts-based programs and bring activity to inner-city areas.

Mr Brennan said the strategy would be enacted after it was approved by Bunbury City Council last week.

Through guiding the council's decision making, the policy is expected to attract creative people to Bunbury and help retain those who are already influencing the city with their creative talents.

"The Creative City Strategy is more than just a document - it is a commitment from council and the City of Bunbury to continue to nurture and embrace the creative minds who reside in our community and encourage others to develop their own creative endeavours," Mr Brennan said.

"Art and culture is an important aspect of our community and you'll find that creative people will be drawn to our community.

"People talk about complete communities having economic development, having a caring community where people can live in a community from the time they are born to the time they pass on."

Mr Brennan said the city should cater to a resident's every need.

"You're catering for all needs, providing employment, providing education, but also providing for art and culture and all those other needs we have," Mr Brennan said.

The strategy will encourage events similar to Bunbury's Re.Discover street art festival and plans such as Vue Group's expansion in Bunbury.

"There are several young leaders emerging in our community who think outside the box and use their creative minds to bring about positive change in Bunbury," Mr Brennan said.

"It is council's hope that others will follow suit now that a strategy is in place to support these people and their ideas.

"We're sending a clear message to our community and to the world that Bunbury is a place with a high value on art and culture.

"I think if a community doesn't have art and culture in it, it really is a community out of balance."
