Candidate pulls out of council race
Former Australian sprint car champion Ron Krikke is pulling out as a candidate for the Bunbury local government election.
He said he was forced to retract his nomination because of a new business venture.
"At this stage - and on looking closer at my commitments in the coming 12 months - should I have been successful, it wouldn't have been fair to the council or to the people of Bunbury," Mr Krikke said.
"The community deserves councillors who can give the energy and enthusiasm it needs."
However, Mr Krikke cannot officially withdraw and remove his name from the ballot paper, according to the law.
A spokesman from the WA Electoral Commission said the local government legislation does not allow a candidate to withdraw after the close of nominations.
Mr Krikke said he was considering whether to run for the next local government election in 2017.
