'Cheeky' lands a hat-trick

Bunbury boxing champion Nathaniel 'Cheeky' May conquered yet another test in his stellar career, winning the WBA Oceania featherweight title at the Eaton Recreation Centre on Saturday night.

May did not have it easy, with the now three-time champion suffering a suspected broken right hand in the fifth round of his 10-round fight with Agus Kustiawan.

But the skilled fighter pushed through to win all 10 rounds unanimously, as the title fight went the distance in front of a massive home crowd.

Trainer Pete Stokes said May was tested, but in the end was too skilled for his opponent.

"He handled it so well," he said.

"When he injured his hand in the fifth round we had to get quite creative.

"When he hurt his hand we used a lot more angle movements."

Stokes said Kustiawan was tough, as he kept coming at May for the whole fight.

"He landed some good body shots on Nathaniel," he said.

"Some of the body shots Nathaniel was laying, I thought Agus was going to go down in the fifth or sixth.

"But the injured hand put a stop to that." May had an x-ray on the injured hand yesterday and the results are expected to be known in the next few days.

May was not the only championship winner on the night.

Perth-based fighter 'Brilliant' Brandon Ogilvie also walking away with the WBA Oceania lightweight title.

Stokes said each fight went the distance in a great night.

"Every fight was awesome," he said.

In big news for Stokes and those at Denning Boxing Gym, Perth-based fighter Sam Blythe has signed on to begin his professional boxing career.
