CRICKET: Settlers seek revenge, face test

George Goodwin, SOUTH WESTERN TIMESSouth Western Times

It is once more with feeling when the reigning LGM Industries Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association first grade champions Hay Park visit Dalyellup College Oval in the third round of this season's one-day competition.

Last time Dalyellup Beach and Hay Park were scheduled to meet was in the preliminary final in March, but the match was rained out and Hay Park was awarded the win and a spot in the grand final.

The Settlers felt aggrieved and will be looking for redemption with the bat and ball in hand come Saturday.

Last time the two teams met was on February 7, with the Redbacks putting the bite on the Settlers in a comfortable victory.

Last week the Redbacks won a close contest against Colts, with left arm paceman coach Chris Waddingham making a mess of Colts lower order after a century stand between Kyle Davis and Murray Goodwin.

This Saturday burly Ben Cooper and his Settlers will be ready for the Redbacks on their home turf.

But it could be a case of keeping an eye on Redbacks' gun batsman Oliver Westbury.

One of the best young imports to grace the emerald green ovals of the South West, the classy Worcestershire Second XI top order batsman had an average of close to 60 last season and is attracting attention with his blazing start to the season.

Westbury was the man of the opening Twenty-20 round and followed with a strong 42 to open his one-day season in the shock loss to Leschenault. Thoroughly warmed to his task, Westbury blasted a brilliant undefeated 111 against Colts at the weekend.

The scary part about the Redbacks is some of their guns are yet to hit their straps this season.

Skipper Jono Whitney scored a nice half century at the weekend, but has not looked in his usual ominous form while gun all-rounder Ross Knoll has managed just 41 runs in his two one-day matches and more worryingly, just the one wicket.

Opener Steve Florence also faces a nervous time this weekend, having made two ducks to start the one-day season and is up against a powerful bowling attack.

The Settlers lost their first match of the season but followed with a solid win over Marist in spite of the absence of high scorers Matt Fink and Tim Cooper.

Scott Harber scored a handy half century against Marist and with some big guns to return this weekend, Dalyellup will not be short of top-end talent.

Riley Hodgson impressed with the ball at the weekend, taking 2-12 off his nine overs and he will be looking to do something similar on Saturday.

There will be no stone unturned in preparations for the two foes in this clash at Dalyellup College on Saturday.
