Eaton school fire investigation

Australind police are investigating a fire which threatened Glen Huon Primary School in Eaton on Sunday.

Dardanup chief bushfire control officer Chris Hynes said it was suspected the fire, which burnt about 2000sq m at the edge of the school oval, was deliberately lit.

Roads were blocked and ash littered the air around Eaton after firefighters were called to the school about 3pm.

Mr Hynes said it took firefighters about 15 minutes to contain the fire.

"Because of the dryness we finished burning the area when we had it under control," he said.

"Some kids were seen in the area and right now we're just hoping somebody saw something."

He also warned that, although burning season was open in some shires, people still needed to take care with the warmer weather.

Glen Huon Primary School principal Carly Hernaman said the fire had caused minimal damage to the school.

"Aside from a little bit of mopping up and a fence that may need replacing, it is business as usual for staff and students," she said.

"We have contacted the police and I understand they are investigating the cause of the fire."

Australind police Sen. Const. Chris Dunbar-Smith said police were seeking information from the public.

"We have some witnesses, but we're very interested if anyone has seen anything," he said.
