Exhibition a vision of youth art

SOUTH WESTERN TIMESSouth Western Times

The annual showcase of South West high school student artwork, Iluka Visions, has impressed judges before the awards night at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries tomorrow.

The exhibition, which includes artwork from 13 of the region's high schools, is in its 24th year of highlighting the work of young artists.

Judges Andrew Frazer, Nicole Mickle and Diana McGirr were impressed by the artwork when they inspected it on Monday.

Mr Frazer said he believed the artwork was brilliant and he enjoyed seeing the work.

"There is a good spread of mediums and you can see the different creative processes for each student and I think the schools are pushing the boundaries," he said.

Mr Frazer, who is in his second year as a judge, said he was impressed by the quality of artwork.

"It's difficult to say whether the quality is better this year but I think there are more mediums represented this year with textiles, printmaking and a host of others," he said.

"It's a great opportunity for the students to have their artwork professionally hung and it's great for them to be celebrated."

Mr Frazer said he looked for unique approaches during his judging process and he valued unique ideas.

"I look for a different path that a student has gone down, which might be unusual but I think it's important that it looks good too," he said.

"The judging process should also be reflective of the student's age, so it's a mixture of a lot of considerations."
