A tailored fishing initiative is aiming to help people with disabilities cast a line in pursuit of catching the fish of a lifetime.

Fishability, formerly known as Fishers with Disabilities, is a group committed to providing people with a disability an opportunity to go fishing at accessible locations.

The inaugural Fishability Day will be held on March 13 at eight places across the State, including the Bunbury and Districts Power Boat Club and the Busselton Jetty.

Fishability executive officer Di Bruce said the program focused on providing people with a disability a social and interactive outing.

"It's a recreational activity we are using to try and develop a network for people with disabilities to engage, interact and develop new skills," she said.

Volunteer South West is helping to coordinate Fishability Day in Bunbury and is calling for volunteers to help.

"From a Volunteer South West point of view we are looking for volunteers for the event," Volunteer South West coordinator Shamara Williams said.

Mrs Bruce also encouraged people to contact Volunteer South West to take part in the initiative and said there were more ways people could help if they were not experienced fishers.

"People don't need to know about fishing to volunteer, they can help in other ways," she said.

"We are pushing for more volunteers to get involved, it's not an arduous task, but it helps people with a disability support their fishing."
