Hair today, gone tomorrow for research

SOUTH WESTERN TIMESSouth Western Times

Colouring her hair bright colours and wearing her blue World's Greatest Shave shirt day in and day out is all part of Helen Winfield's plan to raise awareness for this year's Leukaemia Foundation event.

The long-time Collie resident and her fellow Team Awesomeness members will appear on stage on March 19 at the Crown Hotel, Collie, and either colour their hair or shave it off for the 2016 World's Greatest Shave event.

It will be the 15th time Mrs Winfield has shaved her head for cancer research and in that time she has managed to raise more than $40,000 for cancer research.

Mrs Winfield said she no longer got nervous about the shave itself.

"I probably get nervous when I sit on the stage at the hotel and get handed a microphone and get told to speak," Mrs Winfield said.

"When the clippers come out, I like to hone in on someone in the crowd and just stare at them and their reactions until it is all done."

Leukaemia Foundation WA general manager Andrew York said the foundation welcomed the continuing support from people like Mrs Winfield.

"We are grateful for her commitment to raising funds to help lessen the impact of blood cancer," Mr York said.

"The money raised by Helen has been used to help provide emotional and practical support to families impacted by blood cancer in WA and also invested into vital blood cancer research."

The event will include talks from guest speakers Collie doctor Peter Wutchak and Leukaemia Foundation WA general manager Andrew York.
