Help Salvos pound pavement

With just a few weeks until the annual Red Shield Appeal, The Salvation Army is again seeking volunteers.

Bunbury Corps Lt Harriet Farquhar hopes people will consider helping out with either door-knocking or at shopping centres during the week of the appeal.

"The service we provide in the community comes from a mix of government funding and community donations," she said.

"We know the community is really keen to support us and we need volunteers as the middle man to collect money because we are so busy with day-to-day things."

The Red Shield Appeal will be held on the weekend of May 30-31, with volunteers also to be at nine Greater Bunbury shopping centres during the week prior.

Lt Farquhar said even if it did not feel like a massive contribution, volunteers were extremely valuable to The Salvation Army.

"It can feel like such a small thing to sit at a shopping centre for a couple of hours but that enables us to provide food and blankets to people," she said.

"Even if you don't feel like you have a lot to give, it is something you can do and it's a really simple way to do quite a bit of good in the community."

Shopping centre volunteers can register by contacting the Salvation Army on 9791 2500 from 9am to 12pm, Monday to Thursday.

Door-knock volunteers can turn up at the Salvos' Timperley Road site from 9am to 10am on Sunday, May 31, to be allocated an area.
