Hundreds to walk on Mother's Day

Bunbury resident Michelle Millar knows all about breast cancer and the story of her diagnosis is all-too-common.

Ms Millar decided to begin routine check-ups with her doctor following her mother's cancer diagnosis eight years ago.

She remembers being cleared after the first check-up but two years later, doctors found she had a lump on her breast - leaving her "in absolute shock".

Doctors removed the lump and she needed seven weeks of radiation treatment - but she believes she was lucky because other women are forced to have chemotherapy or to have their breasts removed.

Ecstatic about being cancer-free for five years, Ms Millar will be among hundreds of people who will show their support for the inaugural Mother's Day Classic in Bunbury on May 10.

The 2km walk will start at Big Swamp and registrations on the day will open at 8am, one hour before the event starts.

Organiser Dr Parthasarathy Ramesh hopes those who attend will show their support by wearing pink - the best-dressed will be awarded prizes.

Proceeds from the event, including registration fees, will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which researches treatments for cancer sufferers.

The event will be supported by community groups and volunteers, with food stalls available.

"We are using the inaugural event as a way to raise awareness for breast cancer and breast cancer research," Dr Ramesh said.

"We really want Bunbury and South West residents to help us make this a success as we are using this as a platform for a 4km Ocean Drive walk and run event next year."
