McGeogh joins SW at Boyanup

Former junior rising hockey star Ryan McGeoch, selected for the State Under-15 team a decade ago, has returned to the South West and immediately slotted back into his old ways.

Now all grown up, the son of South West Strikers coach Dave McGeoch snuck under the radar for a heady hat-trick in his first outing on the Bunbury Hockey Stadium, slotting all three goals in Boyanup's 3-0 defeat of Wests.

Last season's big improvers Wests, who elevated themselves from the nether regions to third on the points table, showed their mettle early this season by holding perennial grand finalists and multiple-time champions Marist to a two-all draw.

Associates joined their fellow top four of last season with a handy 5-3 win with South West Strikers' Mat Anderson and man-of-the-match Dave O'Brien on target together with Ben Stam and Peter Nagle against two goals by Exies gun Paul Brandis and Graham Shepherdson.

The South West Hockey League men will have a second hit out before Easter this weekend with Exies and Wests in action tomorrow night at 8.05pm, Marist and Towns South squaring up at 3.15pm on Saturday and Boyanup play Associates for early bragging rights before the long weekend.

Pride of place in the South West Hockey league women went to champions Marist who started with one of their biggest victories of their long association.

Relegating the Maroons back to the wooden spoon, they finished on last season Marist turned a half-time 2-0 tally into 7-1 with a strong spread of scorers.

Inevitably challenging the Blues were the All Blacks both former champions taking an early stranglehold on the women's SWHL with ex-Hockey Star of the Year Allyce Bachos, Jenna Gmeiner and Rosie McCaughan on target in a 4-0 whitewash.

Also starting with a spot in the top-four was Busselton's pride, the Robins with former champion Dee Garstone returning from a lay-off last season to ram home two goals in a 2-1 thriller against fellow top four finishers last season, Associates.

Tomorrow night Exies who take on ex-champions Robins at 6.35 followed on Sunday by a Marist-Collie clash at 12.15 and Boyanup against Associates in what should prove match-of-the-round at 3.15 on the Bunbury Stadium.
