Oakford crash victim Jady Turner, 22, revealed as brother of young boy who died after falling from roof

An already grief-stricken family is mourning another loss after a crash claimed a 22-year-old driver’s life just two years after his younger brother died when he fell from a roof at a construction site. Jady Turner suffered fatal injuries after his orange Holden Commodore Ute clipped an oversized heavy vehicle convoy in Oakford just after 6.30am on Saturday. The orange Holden Commodore ute and a red Ford Falcon sedan were travelling west at speed on Thomas Road at the same time an oversized heavy vehicle convoy was travelling east. Police say the ute did not pull over to let the convoy pass and instead clipped the oversized load before losing control and crashing headfirst into the rear pilot vehicle, a white Ford Ranger. The 75-year-old man driving the pilot vehicle sustained serious injuries and was sent to the same hospital, where he remains in a stable condition. Two men in the Ford Falcon, the 20-year-old driver and his 25-year-old passenger, were not injured. Road Police Commander Mike Bell revealed the 20-year-old failed a preliminary breath test following the incident, returning a positive alcohol reading. Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti offered her condolences to the family of Mr Turner saying her thoughts with them adding she had seen firsthand the affect the death of a loved one on WA’s roads has on a family. “Losing a young man is tragic, and that’s all I think about, what impact that death has on their entire family,” Ms Saffioti said. “We want to make sure those families ... we don’t have more and more families experiencing that, because I’ve seen firsthand the impact of those deaths and families, and It’s tragic, and the pain never ends.” A relative of the Deputy Premier, 15-year-old Tom Saffioti was killed in a crash along with his friend Mark Bogoni after the car they were passengers in slammed into a tree in Seville Grove in 2021. Last month, the State Government announced new laws, called Tom’s Law, restricting the number of passengers a P-plate driver can have in the car in the wake of horror spate of deaths on our roads. Ms Saffioti said while she did not know the full circumstances surrounding Mr Turner’s crash, her message was the same – that “as a whole community, we have a responsibility to be safe on our roads”. “We’re doing all we can in relation to improving our road quality and driver education,” she said. “One of the things that came out of the Road Safety Summit, or its round table, and again, was reinforced last week with passage of new legislation, is how we can work together across the community to educate and target our message to young people… to make sure people understand that they’re not invincible, that there are enormous dangers on the road, and I think this feeling of invincibility sometimes impacts people’s decisions, and we need to keep reinforcing that you have to drive safely on our roads.” Jady Turner is the third child in his family that has passed away. His younger brother, Joshua Field, was playing inside an unsecured residential construction site in Maddington when he lost his balance and fell from a half-built roof in 2022. A loose metal beam then landed on his head, leading to his family having to turn the 12-year-old boy’s life support off a few days later. The family have also lost a child to SIDS. Tributes have poured in for Mr Turner who was remembered as an “absolute legend” and “great bloke” by family and friends. “R.I.P my brother. Fly high and own it up there you’ll always be remembered down here. Thank you for all the memories and the laughter. You’ll be deeply missed but never forgotten,” Beau Weaver said. “Gone too soon, I should have caught up with you more, got some hectic memories and a little bit of stories, you lived a life worth living. Lost a good one, one of the most genuine people I’ve met,” Maximilian Kot said. The 20-year-old driver in the red Ford Falcon sedan has since been charged with dangerous driving causing death in circumstances of aggravation and dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm in circumstances of aggravation. He was released on bail and will appear before Armadale Magistrates Court on December 6. Mr Turner is the 157th person to lose their life on WA roads this year, a tragedy Cdr Bell said was becoming all too common. “It’s another Saturday morning.
