The Carey Park Scout Group has turned a major trophy win into a fund to help its members attend more activities.

After the winning the Wilcox Brown Perpetual Trophy during Bunbury's Australia Day celebrations, the group has decided to use the $1500 it received to create an enabling fund to make its camps and adventures accessible to more members. The trophy recognises outstanding achievement by a volunteer group.

The group's Carey Park Scout Group leader Viv Campbell said the win was a surprise and a pleasure, and helped her realise a dream of creating the fund.

"We had been talking about creating an enabling fund but we weren't sure where the money would come from," she said.

"Some of our members can't afford to attend all of our camps and events even though they are relatively cheap.

"(Sport and Recreation Department fund) KidSport covers the registration but depending on the size of the family, it can be costly for example if we have a weekend camp and include a surfing lesson it might be expensive for a bigger family."

Mrs Campbell said it was a relief to start the fund to help include everyone in the group's activities.

"We are welcoming donations from the public to help the fund grow and they will be tax deductible," she said.

Mrs Campbell said the group was always looking for new members and leaders.
