South West doctor Douglas William McCarthy accused of rape paid for sex to help teen pay Comanchero bikie debt

The award-winning South West doctor accused of raping two 15-year-old girls allegedly offered another teenager a “reward” if she told police she was 16 at the time of their sexual encounter. Veteran medico Douglas William McCarthy was also helping the teenager pay off thousands of dollars of debt to the Comanchero bikie gang, his defence lawyer Christopher Townsend told a bail application hearing at Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday. Dr McCarthy was arrested by police on Monday night and charge with 19 serious sexual crimes. Police detained him at Perth Airport, with his lawyer claiming he had been intending to travel to NSW for work. In a bid to prevent Dr McCarthy securing bail, police submitted to the court several series of phone messages the 60-year-old had sent to two teenage girls currently speaking to investigating officers. The girls are yet to file formal complaints against Dr McCarthy but police claim the doctor paid them for sexual favours while they were underage. Dr McCarthy sent the message to “influence” the girls against giving police a full picture of what happened when they visited his Peel home, the court heard. He allegedly sent the girls messages saying “if the cops call just confirm you were 16. . . you’ll get a reward“ and “Just say he never touched 15-year-olds, he was strict about that” prior to his arrest, but after police raided his on September 12. In another message, Dr McCarthy allegedly told one of the girls that he’d send her money if she told him what she had said to police. “Am I okay or not. . . . tell me everything you told them first (then I’ll send money),” Dr McCarthy allegedly said. The South West doctor, who currently works in Donnybrook as a general practitioner, was granted bail after the lengthy court hearing. Dr McCarthy was required to post a $50,000 bond and secure a $50,000 surety. He will be banned from using social media and has been placed under a home curfew.
