SWFL Finals Series: Eaton v Carey Park

Mitchell Woodcock, SOUTH WESTERN TIMESSouth Western Times

Two of the South West Football League's most powerful clubs over the last decade will compete in the SWFL qualifying final on Sunday when the Eaton Boomers take on Carey Park.

The Panthers were the team to beat in the noughties, winning four premierships, but the Boomers have taken over in the past two years, winning the 2013 and 2014 grand finals after being starved of success.

This weekend they fight for a chance to take on minor premiers Busselton, for a week off and a place in this year's grand final.

The two sides met only two weeks ago, with the Panthers flexing their muscles against the Boomers in a big 40-point win.

Boomers coach Glen Dehring said his side was not as hungry as Carey Park in their last meeting.

"Full credit to Carey Park that night, they were hungrier," he said.

"They had more numbers around the ball. They beat us convincingly at that."

Dehring said premiership forward Jacob Ferrier was available for selection this week.

"He is available and it is something the selection committee will discuss in-depth," he said.

Carey Park coach John Baggetta said the game would be won in the midfield - something the Panthers had focused on this season.

"We have expanded our rotations in the midfield," he said.

"We roll a number of players through there."

Baggetta is also pleased with the improvement of his younger players.

"Our younger guys hit 50 games this year," he said.

"We have a good handful of guys who got a taste of finals last year.

"The majority of them have been steady performers - they have been good in big games."

One Panther the Boomers will have to keep their eyes on is former Swan Districts premiership player Graham Jetta.

Dehring said the Boomers would worry about the Hayward Medal fancy, but conceded he was bound to get his hands on the football.

"He's an outright star," he said.

"He is going to get a lot of football, we just have to put pressure on him.

"They have some other quality midfielders as well."

Bouncedown is at 2.30pm.
