Beautiful weather and good racing made for a great atmosphere at the Bunbury Turf Club's annual Melbourne Cup Day race meet on Tuesday.

Thousands of people headed trackside to enjoy a day out with friends, try their luck with a bet or don their finest for the Fashions on the Field.

After eight adrenaline-pumping local races and about 3500 people through the gates, club chief executive officer Paul Rossiter was happy with how the day turned out.

"You couldn't ask for a better day - the weather has been great, great racing, just a really all-round great day," he said.

"The vibe has been good and it's a really friendly, happy crowd here."

Between each race, Bunbury's most fashionable headed centre stage to strut their stuff and compete across four categories - Overall Winner, Runner-Up, Best Male and Millinery - for $4000 worth of prizes from Prime West Centrepoint.

Bunbury race fans took out each of the four spots, with overall winner Ainsley Bayley wowing the judges in a Mackenzie Mode dress, Reny Kestel hat and Valentino shoes.

"I'm very surprised and very happy - it's a really fun thing for a lady to do I think," she said.

Black and white was a winning combination in the male division, with Sam Fotu pairing a slick white jacket with a shirt, pants and tie from Brooklyn For Men in Bunbury to take out the top spot.

"I just think it's a great day and I think it's good to see so many people get dressed up and get involved," Mr Fotu said.
