Volunteers needed to re-light the night
A sea of blue, yellow and white lanterns dotted along the pathways of the Leschenault Inlet - this is the vision of one influential Bunbury charity organiser for a fundraiser in October.
The Leukaemia Foundation's Light the Night event raises money for more than 60,000 Australians who live with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder.
Community group coordinator Elizabeth Hovey said with the help of many much-need volunteers she hoped this year's community walk would bring a charity-enthused spark back into Bunbury.
"We are looking for volunteers to help spread the word by pre-selling lanterns to local businesses and hanging posters around town," Mrs Hovey said.
"We want to really re-light the night and renew the enthusiasm for this amazing cause."
Each lantern is colour coordinated - blue to show you care, yellow to remember a loved one and white for an individual's own blood cancer journey.
Volunteer Vanessa Kemp said this year would be the third time her family had taken part in the community event - with a couple of reasons close to their hearts.
"My mother-in-law passed away from leukaemia in September last year and we are also supporting a friend's young boy Seth who has recently been diagnosed with leukaemia," Mrs Kemp said.
"These events are important to help raise funds and awareness in order to try and find a cure."
Bunbury's Light the Night community walk will be held on October 9 - volunteers can register by visiting the website www.lightthenight.org.au or contact 1800 500 088.
