Warwick's hot form continues
Myalup hoop Lucy Warwick had a weekend to remember, when she rode the Lindsey Smith-trained Zarantz to victory at the $120,000 TABTouch Pinjarra Cup (2300m) on Sunday.
It was the second consecutive country cup victory for Warwick, who last weekend won the XXXX Gold Albany Cup in the saddle of Zarantz.
Zarantz was sitting in fourth with 800m to go, but hit the turn in second and held off the fast finishing Tower of Lonhro, who came from 11th, to claim the big victory.
The five-year-old gelding was a $3.20 favourite to win the race and the pair did not let the punters down, riding sensationally in a strong field which also included Lou Luciani's Tonto and the Michael Lane-trained Cougar Nights.
Zarantz has now won seven races from 27 starts and brought in more than $300,000 worth of prize money.
Warwick also had a win on Saturday at Ascot, riding Aunty Zelma (who is trained by her father Justin) to victory in the $40,000 Australian Reliance Handicap (1100m).
The pair came from ninth in the turn to steal victory from Marchand who was storming home with Jake Casey in the saddle.
Warwick also placed well in the $500,000 Amelia Park- Karrakatta Plate, with Saul's Special coming in third with the young jockey in the saddle.
In what was a tight finish, Warwick rode the two-year-old bay colt strongly around the turn and looked like they could challenge winner Whispering Brook, only to fall short by just over a length.
Warwick now has 38 metro wins and 28 provincial victories for the season, with 66 wins in total from 400 starts in an impressive display. Warwick will now prepare for Ascot tomorrow.
