Young archers target prize

Bunbury Archery Club's newest crop of shooters have shown discipline beyond their age and experience levels, according to head coach Coral Dandridge.

Nathan Nguyen, 12, became WA's cub champion in the State championships earlier this month when he set records and Brent Tankink, 11, finished second in the same category.

Two other shooters, Nathan Hodgson and 14-year-old Katharina Turner, both finished second in their categories despite having spent less than one year in the sport.

Dandridge, who is also an Archery Australia national judge, said the club had a focus on family, with Nathan Nguyen and Brent's fathers shooting in Bunbury.

She said their cub success was due to the commitment they had shown to archery.

"It's brilliant because a lot of hard work goes into it," she said.

"In Nathan (Nguyen) and Brent's case, at 11 and 12 their discipline is outstanding and they are devoted to their sport.

"It's a mind game and you have to be disciplined in your mindset."

She also said there were plenty of opportunities for all of the shooters to shine.

"I'm just impressed in all of their shooting, they have been able to create records and when there are tournaments across the State, they will be able to go and represent the club and themselves," she said.

"To see them shine in this area is worth the time you put into them."
