Perth weather: Rain brings wettest 24 hours of the year to parts of WA

A huge downpour has delivered a month’s worth of rain to some parts of WA in a single day.

A massive front swept through Perth and the South West overnight, which combined with shivering temperatures to bring winter in with a clout.

And in some areas, the falls were so heavy, it was the wettest 24 hours of the year.

In Perth, 24.8mm of rain was dumped on the city overnight — the second biggest fall since September last year.

The Perth coast was also battered with Swanbourne notching up 30.4mm, while the Swan Valley didn’t escape the wet weather with 18.4mm overnight.

But Rottnest Island and Mandurah recorded by far the most rain the gauges as the front passed through.

A Rotto holiday was a washout this weekend, with 61mm of rain dropping overnight.

Meanwhile, Mandurah recorded 52.6mm of rain, which not only ranks as the heaviest fall of 2021, but also surpasses the monthly average of 48mm for the month of June.

The South West was also drenched, with Cape Naturaliste copping 19.6mm overnight and another 3mm by lunchtime today.

While in the Great Southern, Walpole has been hit with 26.8mm of rain today alone.

And don’t put the raincoat away just yet.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast 20 to 35mm in Perth before the day’s done, with up to another 15mm tomorrow and a chance of rain for the rest of the week across the city and the South West.

Temperatures dipped below 10C in Perth this morning, which comes on the back of the coldest morning of the year.

The mercury reached just 3.8C in Perth just after 7am on Friday, while Jandakot shivered through a 2C chill and those in the Wheatbelt town of Wandering saw temperatures drop below freezing to -1.4C.
