Funding not whole solution to DV crisis, as Roger Cook prepares to highlight prevention needs at crisis summit

The community must unite to end the scourge of violence against women, according to Premier Roger Cook, who says government funding alone cannot solve the national crisis. Speaking before Wednesday morning’s emergency National Cabinet meeting, Mr Cook also said Federal and State governments had to work together and adopt a unified approach if progress was to be made. The West Australian understands he will use the meeting to call for a stronger focus on prevention, drawing on WA’s focus on the issue. “My Government is focused on doing the work to keep women safe and prevent family and domestic violence in Western Australia,” Mr Cook said in Geraldton on Tuesday. “I’m certainly looking forward to sitting down with other premiers and the Prime Minister tomorrow when National Cabinet meets, where we can talk about, particularly in relation to family domestic violence, how we can all work together better to collaborate and co-operate and make sure that we’ve got uniformity or complementary laws to ensure that we keep the community safe. “My Government can invest hundreds of millions of dollars . . . but we must as a community stand as one against family and domestic violence. It’s not OK.” The Premier added he welcomed “the opportunity to share ideas, learn and collaborate on this important issue”. Speaking in Brisbane on Tuesday, Mr Albanese said there would be a focus on perpetrators and prevention. “We need to acknowledge that this is an issue which is long-term, does require attitudinal change, does require a whole range of measures, but we also need practical, immediate measures and responses as well,” he said. “I look forward to a constructive discussion tomorrow morning.” The meeting comes after four women were allegedly killed by men known to them in the past week, including 78-year-old Joan Drane in Yangebup and 30-year-old mother-of-four Erica Hay in Warnbro.
