Marathon race to fast track bills before break

With the 2024 parliamentary year drawing to a close, the federal government is seeking to pass more than 30 laws before the Christmas break.

Among the list of bills before the Senate on Thursday are:

* A ban on children younger than 16 from using social media.

* An overhaul of the make up of the Reserve Bank.

* Setting up the Build to Rent scheme, which will provide incentives for property developers to construct properties solely to be leased out.

* Changes to the family law courts to address domestic violence

* A proposal to pay countries to accept deported non-citizens and a ban on mobile phones from immigration detention.

* Setting up a national interest framework for the government's signature Future Made in Australia manufacturing push.

* Establishing a national student ombudsman to deal with complaints within the university system

* Issuing penalties for airlines who misuse flight slots at Sydney Airport.

* Streamlining processes allowing for veterans and their families to receive compensation payments.

* Keeping satellite TV services operating in regional areas after commercial stations stop running.
