PLAYER RATINGS: Every player rated as Australia reclaim Border-Gavaskar Trophy in thrilling Sydney Test

For the first time in a decade, Australia hold the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after coming out on top in a Sydney shoot-out. It was tough for all batters but who proved the difference in our player ratings? Jake Santa Maria gives every Australian player a rating out of 10. Scott Boland: 10 A perfect 10 for his ten-wicket match as Scott Boland continues to add to his growing legend with a man-of-the-match performance. He was the best in Australia’s first innings with his 4/31 taking him past 50 wickets in just his 13th Test. He had the ball on a string all match and when Australia needed a hero after giving up a first-innings lead returned to destroy India with 6/45. With Starc playing injured Boland stepped up with match figures of 36.5-10-76 and kept the wood over Kohli removing him twice. Beau Webster: 9 It could have hardly been a better debut for the man known as the “Slug from Snug.” He could have and a wicket in the first innings only for Lyon to spill the chance but gave nothing away with the ball. He had buckets for hands in the slips and a 57 in the first innings held Australia together to get them close to India’s total. Picked up his first wicket in the second despite copping some tap from Pant and then aced the chase alongside Travis Head to hit the winning runs as he firmly repaid the selector’s call and then some. Pat Cummins: 7 Cummins was a touch short in the first innings but still picked up two wickets to help clean up the tail. Then with the game on the line as Rishabh Pant threatened to take the match away from Australia he removed the dangerman second ball of his spell and made sure the tail didn’t wag with 3/44. His captaincy also came to the fore, particularly in the second innings as India attacked but he kept his cool to ensure Australia stayed in the match before turning the screw on day three. Travis Head: 6 It’s been feast or famine for Travis Head this series with his back-to-back tons followed by single-figure scores at the MCG and in the first innings in Sydney. However, coming out to bat with the game on the line at 3/58 Head played the perfect innings keeping the scoreboard ticking over and ensuring Australia didn’t get bogged down in the chase finishing with 34 not out. Usman Khawaja: 6 Fell on the last ball of day one in ugly fashion hopping across and edging one behind with his feet in the air to fire India up after a tough day. Looked back to his best in the second innings with a fluent 41 that was crucial in a tough chase as wickets fell as lunch approached. Though was out once again trying to pull with a bottom edge going through to Pant. Alex Carey: 6 Formed an important partnership alongside Webster with his 21 in the first innings, however, his dismissal will cause food for thought once again bowled through the gate from around the wicket. Wasn’t required in the second innings. His keeping was excellent only giving up 11 byes on a deck that was seaming miles. Mitchell Starc: 5 Bowled bravely through some back pain and picked up 3/49 in the first innings including a classic inswinging yorker to remove Jadeja and largely kept it tight. However, he bowled four poor overs in the second innings getting smashed for 36 runs as he limped to the end of the summer. Nathan Lyon: 5 Hardly required with the ball bowling just six overs in the match all coming in the first innings though did snag Shubman Gill just before lunch on day one. Dropped a tough chance in the gully and made seven not out in the first innings to bring an end to what has largely been a low-key summer for the GOAT. Sam Konstas: 5 A pair of 20s opening the batting could be considered good returns in a match where all batters struggled. Once again wasn’t afraid to attack helping Australia to a flying start to their chase but got himself out in both innings with shots he didn’t need to play. Caught India’s ire once again and the teen sensation may rethink firing up Jasprit Bumrah in the last over of the day. Steve Smith: 3 Looked the best of any batter in the first innings on his way to 33 as he closed in on 10,000 Test runs only to be removed by a rip-snorter by Prasidh Krishna. Another peach from Prasidh left him on 9,999 as the Sydney crowd was left stunned. Loses an extra point for his poor match in the field dropping two, or three if you count the controversial decision on day one, in the slips. Marnus Labuschagne: 1 Just eight runs across two innings as he fell to a good ball by Siraj in the first innings getting a thin edge outside off. However, Labuschagne once again played a late cut straight to gully in the second in what is becoming a clear technical flaw in his game and is clearly still yet to discover his best form.
