Roger That: Fremantle Dockers’ opportunity to prove they’re not just ‘best of the rest’ against Adelaide Crows

To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best. Fremantle proved they are better than Essendon, knocking the lower-ranked out of finals with a strong win at home in front of almost 5,000 fans. But now, it’s time to prove they aren’t just the ‘best of the rest’. In 2024, the Dockers played two sides that finished in the top four. They lost both of those games, to Hawthorn by nine points and Adelaide by 33 points. The Crows defeat was the club’s worst of the season, held goalless at home in a defensive and midfield masterclass by their opposition. A rematch looms on Saturday, as Fremantle head to Norwood Oval for a blockbuster semifinal. To be able to make it through, the Dockers need to land a punch and land it early. Against the Bombers, the hosts did not kick a goal in the first term for the seventh time this season. Partly to blame was the blustering breeze at Fremantle Oval. But the Dockers didn’t help themselves with panicked disposal and poor entries inside 50, despite dominating territory. The Dockers managed to steady the ship in the second term and, with pure ruck dominance from Mim Strom and an injury to Essendon star Maddy Prespakis, run over the Bombers. It won’t be that easy against Adelaide. On top of three premierships, the Crows have plenty more finals experience and won’t be overawed by the occasion, which is half the battle in finals. They also have Jess Allan, a much tougher task than what Strom encountered last week, as well as a smarter midfield, complete with veteran Chelsea Randall and superstar Ebony Marinoff. Add that to a home crowd for the Crows and it’s no surprise the Dockers are rank outsiders to make the preliminary final against reigning premiers Brisbane next week. If Fremantle can remain calm, composed and take their opportunities early, they will put themselves in a strong position to match it with Adelaide and make their play for a spot in the final four. If not, it’s hard to see the experienced Crows letting this one slip.
