Bob Mellsop’s four-year-old Special Lady made it three wins on the bounce at Donaldson Park on Wednesday, although this triumph was anything but easy.

The mare, who scored by half a neck from Auckland Jet (trained by Vanessa Brockman) in the Tint City/Sign City Pace (2100m) crossed over during the early stages, which allowed reinsman Kyle Harper to dictate proceedings along the pegs.

However Brockman’s gelding, who entered with six wins from his first 14 starts, displayed a tremendous turn of foot in the dying stages — with his last-gasp surge at greeting the judges falling agonisingly short.

Wednesday’s win made it three wins from as many starts in WA for the Victorian mare, who has won or placed in nine of her 10 outings — saluting in Geelong, Shepparton, Gloucester Park and now Bunbury.

There was an upset earlier in the day, with outsiders Allaglow ($26) and Twoheartonediamond ($51) outshining red-hot favourite Valentinathebullet in the Breathe Accounting 2YO Westbred Pace (1609m).
