South West Football League edge out Upper Great Southern in nail-biting one point win
The South West Football League kept their unbeaten run when they survived a scare from Upper Great Southern, winning by one point at Arena Joondalup today.
Upper Great Southern were held scoreless by the South West in the final half as the championship favourites claimed the tightest of wins 3.3 (21) to 3.2 (20).
The South West came out slow as Brad Bootsma and Dylan Ross booted early goals for Upper Great Southern.
Upper Great Southern brought plenty of pressure and forced the South West into a number of turnovers.
It took a late goal from Leigh Kohlmann for the South West to show some fight, but Upper Great Southern had all the momentum.
By half-time Upper Great Southern had a 14-point lead.
Jace Cormack, Jesse Crichton and Liam McKenna were working over-time in the midfield for the South West, but were up against a hungry Upper Great Southern outfit who were hungrier at the contests.
The South West got the first goal of the second half when Jeff Carter was awarded a 50m penalty, sending him into the goalsquare from where he converted.
Kohlmann then kicked his second to give the South West the lead for the first time in the game, with just five minutes to play.
From here the South West defended well thanks to Mat Michael and Mason Hislop, to claim their third win of the championships.
