SWFL 2023: Potential double hit for country football clubs as finances likely to be impacted in coming seasons

South West Football League clubs could be negatively impacted on and off field over the next few seasons following a series of amendments to Country Football WA’s rules and regulations for season 2024. Aside from clubs no longer having access to a travel payment program which helped players drive to matches, every senior country football club in WA affiliated to the State governing body will be required to buy new sets of jumpers sporting the new CFWA logo in coming seasons. It is understood all clubs will be given a short-term grace period to buy the new guernseys, following the West Australian Country Football League’s re-branding transition to Country Football WA earlier this year. One SWFL club official told the South Western Times a purchase of this nature could range between $8000-$10,000 because they would need to buy the items across four senior grades, with the figure even higher if shorts were also bought. A CFWA spokesperson quashed a rumour surrounding clubs potentially being fined should they not comply with the re-branding request. “CFWA will work with all leagues and clubs over the next two years to support the full transition to the new branding,” they said. “Fines have not been discussed.” In a letter to league presidents and administrators, CFWA outlined the rationale behind its decision to scrap the travel player payment mechanism for clubs. “In season 2023, the CFWA implemented a trial paid player change regarding travel payments,” it read. “Due to feedback from leagues and clubs, and the focus to endeavour to make life easier for our valued volunteers, CFWA have made changes that we think will make season 2024 and beyond easier for clubs to manage. “There will no longer be access to a travel payment for clubs to pay players to drive to games, however the total salary cap has been increased — with all CFWA-affiliated clubs now able to pay players to a maximum cap of $3500 per week.” The South Western Times contacted several SWFL league coaches and presidents for their thoughts on both amendments, and in all cases, none said they had personally been made aware of the changes. This was brought to the CFWA spokesperson’s attention, who said it was up to the SWFL to ensure all officials and players were brought up to speed. “CFWA has informed all country football leagues of the changes,” they said. “As per any change to the rules and regulations, each league, once notified of any change from CFWA, is responsible for advising the clubs and stakeholders in their league.”
