West Coast John Worsfold confident he can help Eagles return to success as newly-appointed Head of Football

New West Coast head of football John Worsfold is confident the Eagles can bounce back strongly despite going through the most tumultuous time in their history. Worsfold was the latest former club great to return to the Eagles after he was named as the man who would oversee the AFL, AFLW and WAFL programs on Tuesday. It is a significant move by chief executive Don Pyke and comes only eight days after they unveiled Andrew McQualter a their coach for the next three seasons. Worsfold said he was “nervous” around the new role at the Eagles despite being the club’s most influential figure. “I’m nervous as well because it is so different and it’s a new role for me but I’m confident in the footy experience that I’ve got over 30 odd years and round it out with some corporate experience as well which has taught me a lot over the last four years,” he said. “It’s a fairly broad, overarching role working closely with all managers throughout all three football programs ... and overseeing and supporting all those guys in terms of list management, coaching structure, player and coach development to make sure we’re at the cutting edge with everything we do. “It’s been a very tough run for the footy club but not something we haven’t been through before. “This time I feel as though people are a little bit concerned that there’s no light at the end of the tunnel or a close light at the end of the tunnel, but I’m sure it is there and I’m sure the club has made some changes and a lot of fresh faces around. “The club has a history of bouncing back really strong and I’m sure it will be the case again.” Worsfold, who has not worked in football since he ended his 107 game tenure as Essendon coach in 2020, will begin the new role on November 4.
