Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club continues to punch above its weight as it prepares for the Australian Championships in Perth at the end of the month.

The Bunbury club sent a contingent of 32 competitors to the WA Senior Surf Life Championships last weekend, finishing seventh overall to once again prove it can mix it with the best in the State.

Director of surf sports Denise Duncan said it was the club’s best ever performance at the State Championships.

“To finish seventh overall with 32 competitors when you are up against clubs like Trigg with 300 plus is outstanding, ” she said.

“There is no handicap system so Bunbury earned that result in its own right.

“Overall they came away with 28 individual medals as well as many fourths and fifths.

“It was a good consistent overall effort which shows the strength and depth of the club at the moment.”

Duncan was particularly impressed with the performance of some of the female athletes.

“Jess Willsher won three State Championship golds and was part of the Under-15 team that brought home silver in the board relay, ” she said.

“In the Under-17 arena our six girls just dominated with a number of golds, silvers and bronzes - and they’re only 16.”
